Brandywine Coffee Roasters partnered with Mbizi Washing Station to bring Rwanda Women's Coffee Extension, Kawa Yacu Natural, a project launched in 2017 by Aline Christine and Odette Uwamariya. This all women cooperative is reshaping Rwanda's specialty coffee scene by giving female producers a stronger voice. This lot showcases their natural processing expertise, delivering a creamy and fruit forward profile that deserves attention.
The processing method is central to the cup. Natural processing concentrates sweetness and fruit character, and in this origin, Bourbon grown at around 1700 meters contributes brightness and clarity. The terroir of the region and the high altitude shape a cup that's both approachable and nuanced. In the cup, it tastes like raspberry, kiwi, and jammy fruit. The sweetness sits against a vibrant acidity, creating balance rather than dominance. This is a great example of how a thoughtful cooperative program and processing choice can yield a cup that's educational for curious home brewers as well as satisfying on its own.
