Shoebox Coffee presents Burundi Mutana Hill Washed. The roaster partnered with local producers surrounding the Heza washing station to bring this Washed coffee from the highlands of Kayanza, Burundi. This coffee tells a story of community effort in which the Heza station sits at the crossroads of remote mountain life and diligent craft. The varietal mix—Field Blend including Red Bourbon and Mibirizi—speaks to a terroir that rewards collaboration and patience in the process.
The processing method is Washed and central to how the cup unfolds. The roaster describes the taste as peaches, oolong milk tea, and lemon verbena; in plain terms this translates to a bright stone fruit sweetness with delicate floral notes and a tea-like lift. In the cup you can expect intense oolong tones with syrupy undertones; as it cools, ripe peach and apricot flavors emerge with a milky sweetness reminiscent of peach ice cream. Floral accents like bergamot and jasmine join the aroma, lending a fragrant finish that lingers pleasantly. Origin and terroir matter here. Regionally, Kayanza is known for mountain coffees with a characteristic clarity when processed cleanly.
The washed method highlights the cup’s brightness and the fruit-forward profile that comes from this high-altitude origin, offering a balanced cup with a refined sweetness and a clean, nuanced finish.
